On last week’s show:
Willie Colón - trombonist, composer and producer - and Eddie Palmieri - pianist, composer and bandleader - were both giants of Latin music, and both New Yorkers of Puerto Rican descent. They recorded for the Fania label, and were both enormously influential in developing Salsa and Latin Jazz. Willie Colón died in February 2026, while Eddie Palmieri died last August. We pay tribute to both in the first half of this programme.
Tinariwen recorded their new album in exile in Algeria with contributions from younger musicians and singers.
Lamisi is an Afro-soul artist and singer-songwriter from Ghana.
Cheikh Ibra Fam spent 6 years with Orchestra Baobab and now lives in La Réunion.
Kay Slice, resident in Rotterdam, plays Ghanaian diaspora highlife.
Nairobi-based Odd Okoddo make music based on Dodo, the song-and-dance tradition of the Luo people.
Natacha Atlas and partner Samy Bishai (violinist and producer) deliver an anti-war statement.
Dumama combines the sound of the Xhosa uhadi harp with experimental electronics.
Clara Serra Lopez is of Cuban and Catalan heritage, based in London.
Alabaster DePlume is a English saxophonist, poet, composer and activist.
