This week’s “Ear To The Globe” is an instrumental special - beginning with the Finnish four-piece harmonica of Sväng, and the electro-tango of the Plaza Francia Orchestra, and moving into the Portuguese accordion quartet of Danças Ocultas and the Scandinavian guitar flamenco of Robi Svärd.
The Iranian Rostami cousins give a contemporary account of traditional forms, and Sam Evans’ Tabla Project puts the eponymous percussion instrument into a seductive range of “world” contexts.
The centrepiece of the programme is three recordings from the Ragas Live Festival in New York, 24 of which have been released as a Retrospective from the Festival’s 6-year history.
We conclude with the piano-balafon duet of Jean-Philippe Rykiel and Lansiné Kouyaté, the dreamy contemplations of US-based quartet, Opium Moon, and a poignant autumnal piece from this month’s no. 1 Transglobal Chart placing, SANS (www.transglobalwmc.com).
