On this week’s programme:

The adventurous and exploratory record label Sublime Frequencies have issued a Beginner’s Guide to their catalogue. Included here are tracks originally to be found on “Shadow Music of Thailand”, “Cambodian Cassette Archives”, “Dara Puspita 1966-1968”, “Thai Pop Spectacular”, “Bollywood Steel Guitar”.

“Nostalgic Bollywood” chronicles the early years of the Bollywood film industry.

Try Paradise is a trip to imaginary India, but combining voice and santoor with Caribbean steel pan.


Orquesta Akokán are a US-Cuban Latin jazz outfit inspired by the Mambo masters.

Mestizo is a UK-Colombian collective with members of Ondatrópica, La Perla, Frente Cumbiero and more.

Gaïshais a collaboration between Brussels-Moroccan Aïcha Haskal and musicians from the Zephyrus label.

King Ayisoba is Ghanaian band-leader and leading figure in the kologo style.

Bassidi Koné is Malian djembe and balafon player with his debut solo album.

Moonlight Benjamin and her band play rock with Haitian vodou influences.

Polobi is a traditional singer from Guadeloupe, with musical soundscapes from Doctor L, Liam Farrell.

Houria Aicha is from the Atlas Mountains in the North-East of Algeria.

Sarathy Korwar is a US-born, Indian-raised, percussionist and composer based in London.

Sababa 5 are are a funky Middle-Eastern synth outfit from Tel Aviv.

Ofege were a popular Nigerian student band in the 1970s, now reissued.


Christine Tobin is an acclaimed Irish singer who has returned home after a long sojourn abroad.

Gao Hong on Chinese pipa is in duet with Kadialy Kouyate on Senegalese kora.

Tuvan chanteuse Sainkho Namtchylak sings the sounds of nature accompanied only by the watery sounds of the Venetian islands.
