The Nigerian Fuji Machine are a modernised version of the Islamic Yoruba genre.

The Tonga Boys from Malawi play an electronically-enhanced version of their traditional Tonga music.

Gyedu-Blay Ambolley was the funky voice of Ghana circa 1975.

Fofoulah, led by the vocals and percussion of Kaw Secka, are electronic dub-punk with an African edge.

Ali Hassan Kuban was Nubian Egyptian, and his 80s and 90s dance output is reissued on Piranha.


Flo is a Neapolitan singer-songwriter and actress - produced by Daniele Sepe.

Kalascima play beat-enhanced folk-rock-trad from Southern Italy.

Suistamon Sähkö are from Finland with a hip-hop feel to their trad sounds.

Odpoczno locate electric guitar into their Polish village music.

Domna Samiou was an important Greek singer who recorded an album and toured in Sweden in 1980.


Dawda Jobarteh, from The Gambia and based in Denmark, takes the kora into jazzy territory.

Gaye Su Akyol is the vibrant sound of contemporary Istanbul.

Le Trio Joubran are three brothers and three ouds from Palestine.

Eténèsh Wassie & Mathieu Sourisseau play a startling mix of Ethiopian song and avant-jazz.


Aleka is a Romanian singer and cellist, based in Ireland, who will be performing in Dublin on December 4th with some fine Irish jazzers.

The Waterson-Carthy family are peerless English folk.

Arlo Bigazzi and Stefano Saletti have produced a striking electro-acoustic ambient album with a Biblical theme.

Armenian-Turkish duo, Vardan Hovanissian and Emre Gültekin release their second album of duduk, baglama and more.
