On this week's programme:


Fanfare Ciocarlia, from the Romanian village of Zece Prajini, have been Balkan Brass pioneers for 25 years.

Branko Galoic is a guitarist and singer from Croatia, now resident in France, who got the brass bug too.

Massilia Sound System are a Marseille ragga outfit since 1984 with lyrics in French and Occitan.

The Kondi Band, with input from LA and London, are based around Sorie Kondi’s 15-pin thumb piano.


Back in the ‘70s funk bands in Yaoundé, Cameroon, relied on the church’s sound systems to get recorded.

Monsieur Doumani are a Cypriot trio, now with extra bite and power on the new collection.

Taj Weekes is a singer-songwriter, poet and musician from St Lucia.


In Bogota Eblis Álvarez, aka Meridian Brothers, joined forces with Iván Medellín, aka Conjunto Media Luna.

Nilza Costa is from Salvador in Bahia but longtime resident in Italy.

The Balimaya Project is a 16-piece mande-jazz ensemble based in London, led by percussionist Yahael Camara Onono who also features in the South African-Senegalese-London gathering “On Our Own Clock” - remotely organised during lockdown.

Monoswezi is African and Scandinavian band with members from Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Norway and Sweden.


Purbayan Chatterjee, sitar virtuoso, has a distinguished array of guests on his East-meets-West album.

South African multi-instrumentalist Guy Buttery explores connections with two Indian masters.

Abdelli Abderrahmane is from the Kabyle people of Algeria and has first-hand experience of exile.

Bob Holroyd is a UK electronic composer on the new Real World X label.
