On this week's programme:


Tshegue are an Afro-punk duo from Paris and Kinshasa.

Kokoko! are from the Congo with that Kinshasa DIY ethic and instrumentation.

Africa Express, Damon Albarn’s band of adventurers, recorded their new album in South Africa with local musicians.

The “Alefa” collection highlights Madagascan styles from the ’70s and ’80s.

The Garifuna people, based in Belize and other parts of Central America, trace their racial ancestry to a wrecked slaveship in the 17th century.


Renowned Hungarian violinist, Lajko Félix joins forces with Polish powerhouse fiddle quintet, Volosi.

Serbian trumpeting maestro Boban Markovic launches his first new release since 2013.

Marcia Griffiths is reggae royalty with a career dating back to 1960s Bob & Marcia days.

Veteran pianist, Monty Alexander has long combined his Jamaican reggae heritage with jazz, now with the focus on Thelonius Monk.

Kokoroko are a London jazz ’n’ afrobeat outfit, and for me, one of the stars of this year’s Womad.


An early Womad performance by the great Pakistani singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan gets a release now after 34 years!

Oum El Ghait Benessahraoui is a Moroccan singer-songwriter with cosmopolitan influences.

Torgeir Vassvik is a Norwegian Sami musician and composer.

Baba Sissoko is ngoni player, singer and percussionist from Mali.


There are new Rough Guides to blind, black blues musicians, and to the early precursors and practitioners of country music.

The Lost Words collective of Scottish and English folk musicians, plus Senegal’s Seckou Keita, play songs celebrating descriptions of the natural world.
