Playlists
On this week’s programme:
Sami Galbi is a Swiss-Moroccan musician from Lausanne.

Arabic fuzz outfit Al-Qasar get a remix from French duo The Limiñanas.

BCUC are an exciting live band from Soweto with a fourth album on release.

Onipa are a UK Afro-band led by Tom Excell (Nubiyan Twist) and Kweku Sackey (K.O.G.).

The new single from Les Amazones d’Afrique features Mamani Keïta and Fafa Ruffino.

La Sève are a French quartet influenced by the music of Cameroon and Congo.

Pamela Badjogo is from Gabon and was a member of Les Amazones.

The London Afrobeat Collective have Juanita Euka on vocals.

The Bongo Joe label are putting out a collection of classic merengue from the Dominican Republic.

And Smithsonian release another album from the long-running LA ensemble Mariachi Los Camperos.

The second half of this programme is devoted to the jazzy side of Ear To The Globe. You may have noticed a small increase in jazz representation on the programmes in the last couple of years, a development I put down to the fact that the jazz/improv side of things provides some of the most creative and interesting music around; there is often also an overlap with global styles. Who needs genres anyway? So I am here highlighting six of my favourite jazz-connected releases of 2023, which got squeezed out of the two Highlights programmes at the turn of the year.
