Richard Thompson is a legend in UK folk-rock songwriting.

Dereb the Ambassador is a Sydney-based Ethiopian soul singer.

Bixiga 70 are a 9-piece Sao Paulo instrumental big band launching their fourth album.

André Sampaio, with a career in a Brazilian reggae band, turns to ‘70s afro-rock for his second solo album.


Parisian Sofiane Saidi offers a contemporary version of Algerian rai.

Lemma are a female group of singers and percussionists from Southern Algeria.

Harouna Samaké is a kamele ngoni player and sideman to Salif Keita.

Vieux Farka Touré, son of the late Ali Farka Touré, comes to Dublin later this month.


Thabang Tabane plays a contemporary version of his father Philip’s malombo music from South Africa.

Ronnie Moipolai was one of the guitarists from Botswana featured in the recent Piranha compilation; he has died, though only in his 30s.

Gwenifer Raymond is a remarkable Welsh guitarist in the mode of the American primitivists.

Amira Kheir has a Sudanese and Italian background, and incorporates jazz and soul in her singing style.

The Belouga Quartet are pipe and tabor players from Provence, playing music written by contemporary composers.


Jean-Philippe Rykiel, who has worked with some of the greatest names in West African music, plays piano along with balafon player Lansine Kouyaté.

Cemîl Qoçgîrî & Manuel Lohnes play Euro-Mesopotamian duets of tenbûr and bass.

Opium Moon are a quartet with members from the US, Iran, Israel and Canada.
