On this week's programme:

2018 ebbing and flowing into 2019.

Some strays and omissions from the 2018 Highlights programmes:

The Dur Dur Band provided a lively snapshot of 1980s Mogadishu.

“Small Island Big Song” was a fantastic ecological ethnomusicological journey from the Pacific round to the Indian Ocean.

David Attenborough’s recordings from Sierra Leone, Paraguay, Madagascar, Indonesia etc were almost forgotten in the BBC Sound Library.

The Ragas Live Festival in New York issued a big collection of 24 performances from the six years of the festival.

Heartfelt bluesman Eric Bibb released one of his finest records to date.

And Catrin Finch and Seckou Keita triumphed again with more harp-kora duets.

Then there were albums I had missed altogether during 2018:

BandAdriatica - great Southern Italian, North African influenced brassy folk.

Cinkuši - earthy folk from Croatia.

Balaio - funky jazz quartet from Brazil.

We had some brand new, not-even-released-yet 2019 items:

Bassekou Kouyate - on the button again with those gorgeous vocals from his wife Ami Sacko.

Leyla McCalla sticks it to capitalist society with New Orleans swing and activism.

“Nostalgique Kongo” is a sweet reminder of the early acoustic days of Congolese rumba.

Inexplicably absent from programmes up until now are:

Subhasis Bhattacharya - superbly wide and varied album from a master percussionist.

Maarja Nuut & Ruum - deeply atmospheric album from Estonia.

A Filetta - bewitching Corsican voices together with Paolo Fresu’s trumpet, and bandonéon too.

Here also are:

Ayrad - the sound of contemporary Morocco in Montreal.

Ooldouz Pouri - Iranian singer and pupil of Mahsa Vahdat.

Vardan Hovanissian and Emre Gültekin bring together, in Belgium, the traditions of Armenia and Turkey.
